On our way to Madrid
Ok, the adventure begins! ?
We have two nights booked in a spacious appartment in Madrid. Two bedrooms ?, two bathrooms ?, a terrace ?… what more can we ask for?
This will allow us to discover the city without restriction. Prepare for fun ?, and prepare for hot ?!
We’ll enjoy a first walk in the city, walking form the apparment through Paseo del Prado, beautiful bulevard where the main museums of the city are located towards the center, and we’ll see the beautiful Gran Vía, or Great Street, full of life and surrounded by bars and rooftops (wink, wink). Let the party begin!
Free day
We sure enjoyed yesterday (hopefully we are alive and fresh still for today XD). Today it’s just a free day to walk around, discover different streets or “callejear” and just enjoy the city. Main things to see today are:
- Parque del Retiro (biggest park in Madrid), it used to have a zoo and it has the famous “Palacio de Cristal” or Cristal Palace and a beautiful minilake with rowing boats.
- Salamanca area. Most expensive streets in the city, beautiful to walk throug.
- Chueca and Malasaña. The “gay-district” and the equivalent of Kallio to enjoy geting lost in their corners.
We have planned a dinner in a terrace in a beautiful square to enjoy proper tapas. I better leave my belt at home for this ????
Family time
After a couple of nice days in the capital and a nice breakfast today, some nice calm time is welcomed back in Las Rozas. ??
Sorry… Did I say calm?? Alejandro’s family will be there!! Let’s have a lunch celebration outdoors. I hope you are hungry, and ready for chaos ?
El Escorial
With all this amount of people and activities, we need some calm time the three of us. ??♀️??
Do you want to have a walk around El Escorial? Beautiful town in the mountains only 30 minutes away from home. A historical residence of the King of Spain built between 1563 and 1584 by order of King Philip II. El Escorial is the largest Renaissance building in the world.
Dinner
And to end the day, why not to have dinner in a nice restaurant in Las Rozas?
Anything left to do?
Ok, let’s review the trip so far:
✅ Tanning and swimming

✅ Nice food
✅ Shopping
❌ Best sunset. Whaat? Ok, we can fix this ?
Sunset ?
It’s the last night, and we should enjoy it properly. Get your luggage ready ? so you can enjoy of the rest of the day care free. We can enjoy the day as we want. But for the sunset, we are going to one of the most beautiful places in Madrid: The Temple of Debod.
This is an Egyptian temple dating back to the 2nd century BC, transported to Madrid’s Cuartel de la Montaña Park. The temple was donated to Spain by the Egyptian government to save it from floods following the construction of the great Aswan Dam.
This chapel was created at the beginning of the 2nd century BC at the orders of the Meroë King Adijalamani dedicated to the god Amun and the goddess Isis. After Egypt was annexed by the Roman Empire, the emperors Augustus and Tiberius finished off the construction and decoration of the building.
In the 6th century AD, following Nubia’s conversion to Christianity, the temple was sealed off and abandoned. In the 20th century, owing to the construction of the dam, the Egyptian government gave the temple as a gift to the city of Madrid and it was transported and rebuilt stone by stone in its current location. It was opened to the public in 1972. The reconstruction in Madrid kept the building’s original orientation; that is to say, from East to West.
The temple and its gardens are located on the site where the Cuartel de la Montaña stood, the military building constructed between 1860 and 1863, where Napoleon’s French troops shot the rebels of the uprising of 2 May 1808, a scene that was portrayed in the famous painting by Goya The Third of May 1808 or The Execution.
A century later, it was also the scene of the military uprising in July 1936, which would lead to the Spanish Civil War. During the conflict, the barracks was practically destroyed and it was later demolished.
